Ten Bucks and a Beer
June 17, 2007
Father's Day, and I'm being lazy. I've got ten
bucks left on an iTunes certificate, and a cold beer in my hand.
No single album suits my fancy.
So...let's see how I can
entertain myself.
 |
Aguas de Marco - 5:25
- Emilie-Claire Barlow - Tribute
Ever since I stumbled across her album, "Like A Lover," I've been taken in
by this sweet-voiced Canadienne. The whole album looked good, but
I only had ten dollars. Judging from the 30-second bytes, this
seemed best. I was not disappointed. |
If I Were A Bell - 3:21 -
Amel Larrieux - iTunes/Single
R&B Singer/Songwriter, the writeup says. I felt like an old fart
in not knowing who this young woman was. On the other hand, she
sings so well, I congratulated myself in no time for my good taste. |

The Lady Is A Tramp - 3:53
- Queen Latifah - We All Love Ella
I love Ella, too - but not all of the singers on this tribute album.
That makes this track an almost-perfect single purchase, because it's
not available anywhere else. I think Queen Latifah sounds a lot
like Ella. Very nice! |
What A Little Moonlight Can
Do
3:32 - Sara Lazarus - It's All Right With Me
Originally ran across Ms. Lazarus (on an earlier album) in the bargain
bin at a London record shop. This album features guitarist Biréli
Lagrène. This track is phenomenal. Wish I'd gotten the whole
album for Father's Day. Hey...the day isn't over. |

Down With Love - 2:31 -
Holly Palmer/Michael Bublé - Soundtrack
Closes the movie - I figured out Mr. Bublé right away, but waded
through the credits to be surprised by Holly Palmer...it's like nothing
I've heard her do before. |
Cruisin' - 3:34 - Huey
Lewis & Gwenyth Paltrow - Soundtrack
Heard this one on a "Lite FM" radio station in the middle of Michigan
somewhere, with no announcement as to who it was. Remembered a
line, and some persistent Googling turned up a pretty fair track from a
nowhere movie. Ms. Paltrow sounds a lot like Linda Ronstadt. |

In The Wee Small Hours Of
The Morning
2:51 - Nanci Griffith - Ruby's Torch
Recommendation from a friend, who raves about her. I think the
quality of her voice is probably an acquired taste. But this track
is almost sweetly sad. |
On The Street Where You
Live - 5:33 - Holly Cole - Blame It On My Youth
Oh, my. Imagine this song, sung by a deranged stalker.
Reminds me of Nellie McKay, except that this came first. |
 |
 |
What A Wonderful World -
3:17 - Reneé Olstead - iTunes/Single
Been too long since we heard an album from this young woman.
This single fed my Reneé jones. |
Baby, You've Got What It
Takes - 3:47 - Nellie McKay - Soundtrack
Really, really talented. Why do I think she's probably very
high-maintenance for the people around her? Probably that record
company dispute Anyway, with Marc Shaiman, a very nice touch to a
so-so romantic comedy. (But I recognized her right away. I
was saying, "That's Nellie McKay!") |
