Tierney Sutton Band - On The Other Side (Telarc)
Released: February 6, 2007

I've made no secret - I'm no fan of scat.

Unless it's Tierney Sutton.

And then - well, Ms. Sutton and her band would have to commit some egregious transgression, because they're more than okay in my book.

Got my son interested in live jazz. We went to Kennedy Center's KC Cabaret to see Ms. Sutton and the band a few years ago, and my (then) 11-year-old in his grown up suit turns to me and says, "These guys are very good, Dad."

No...kidding, kid. No kidding.

Ms. Sutton burst onto my playlists a few years ago with "Blue In Green," the tribute to pianist Bill Evans.

Perhaps only Ms. Sutton knows how scat is supposed to work, because I've always put her on the shelf as the ultimate in phrasing on some of these classics. This disc sports two versions each of "Get Happy" and "Happy Days Are Here Again;" one hauntingly slow, the other, gospel-like.

She and the band nail them both.

Jack Sheldon, always worth the price of admission by himself, joins Ms. Sutton on "I Want To Be Happy," and plays a trumpet solo, to boot.

A joyous two-fer.

The simple "Happy Talk" gets an appropriately intricate treatment. I could hear it in my mind, and anticipated it even before it began playing.

For some reason, I think of Ms. Sutton's work as appropriate for cranking up loud, and playing in my convertible as I speed up the Pacific Coast Highway.

Now. If I only had that convertible.

Very highly recommended.
