Saltman Knowles
Quintet - Featuring Lori Williams (Blue Canoe)
Released - May 15, 2007
The publicity handout calls this "Modern Post Bop." I call it "cruising"
music, because the visual image I get is one of those helicopter scenes
of the sports car cruising up the Pacific Coast Highway on the way
to...sorry. Got a little carried away there.
Let's talk about the disc. Mark Saltman plays Bass, William Knowles
plays piano - so we're a little heavy on piano and bass; but Ms.
Williams is never overpowered. Arrangements are hand-crafted, and fit
together flawlessly. This disc swings nicely. All original compositions,
many sound as if they're classics.
Or should be.
Ms. Williams is perfect for this kind of outing, and shows a versatility
in style that fits the variety of tracks as seamlessly as a silk
stocking.
My favorite tracks include "What About April" and "Freetime," which
features a nice solo turn by Charles Langford on sax, as does "The Color
Of Midnight."
This is all good stuff. iTunable, you should go listen. I think you'll
like it.
Note to Blue Canoe Records - these guys deserve better cover art.
Recommended.
