Louise Rogers - Come
Ready And See Me (RILO)
Release: February 1, 2008
This is another from the "it grew on me" collection. There's no single
track that grabbed me by the throat, but I kept going back. One track
that caused that was "Be My Baby," a bawdy little Nikki Giovanni poem
turned into a clever swingy-blues track by Ms. Rogers. Another was "Come
Ready And See Me," a simple, poignant song about love, and time running
out.
Ms. Rogers' voice is simple - no tricks here. And while I'm not normally
a fan of vocalese (except when I am), the turns were short and sweet
enough to add, rather than detract, as on "Louise."
A Celtic "Lass From The Low Countries" closes the disc, which features
an outstanding solo by Ms. Rogers' husband - bassist Rick strong. While
I believed that Ms. Rogers fine voice was drowned out by the bass on
their last outing, the duet on this haunting track was spot on.
Listen first - this may not be for everyone. There are few familiar
tunes, and I learned a lot as I listened, and Googled around, looking
for details on some of these tracks.
The more I listened and learned, the more I liked it. Only nine tracks,
I wanted more.
And that's not a bad place for a performer to leave 'em...wanting more.
Highly recommended.
