Reba
McEntire - #1s (MCA Nashville)
Released - November, 2005
33 #1 cuts claimed on these two discs. I count 20 through 1997 in my
dog-eared Joel Whitburn book, so I believe it.
That's a lot of damn number-one tunes. And two bonus tracks to boot.
Singer, actress (Forget the TV show - If you never saw "Tremors," you're
missing something good), businesswoman...and apparently
a new master in
product placement.
And one of those performers
who is now known only by her first name, like "Madonna," or "Cher."
If there's a woman who appears to be trying to have it all, it's Reba.
I suppose that's why this stuff works. She's inherited the mantle of
Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette - no simple task - and put her imprint on
those "Woman to Woman" songs that Martina McBride tries to do. With
Martina it sounds shrill and blunt. Reba's tunes speak to something deeper
and identifiable.
Songs like "You Lie," "Is There Life Out There," and my favorite
tear-jerker, "Does He Love You," with Linda Davis.
Agreed, country music can be an acquired taste. If you're too far into
today's Pop-Country divas, even Reba can be an acquired taste. It's
sounds more like the country music I grew up with.
It's one worth acquiring. If you enjoy Reba...or country music, this is a
must-add to your collection.
You'll want to be possessive
about it.
And I'm not going to mention
the apostrophe.
