Liz Phair -
Somebody's Miracle (Capitol)
October, 2005
Oh, somebody please stop me.
I'm reviewing a Liz Phair disc.
The only thing I know about Liz Phair is that she provides the soundtrack
to more than one (probably many more than one) adolescent act
of...um...satisfaction. Raging guitar, plenty of attitude, and hits in the
voice of the centerfold - taunting the reader, like "HWC." (No, you'll
just have to look it up.)
So. Why am I here? I'm reading an article in "Entertainment Weekly" or
somesuch in the barbershop, and the reviewer (one who gets advance copies,
no doubt) is going on and on about the "new" Liz Phair; the one who is
taking grief because she has sold out.
That's right. She's sold out.
No more "HWC" here. The first cut is "Leap of Innocence," and though the
guitar is a bit louder than your typical Fiona Apple disc - there isn't a
lot that's different. Earnest angst, artfully articulated. "I had so many
friends in rehab...a couple who practically died."
Yeah, Liz. Me, too.
Big whoop.
My wife and I listened over wine and cheese on a Saturday night. "There's
nothing awful about this disc," Gail said.
She's right. Nothing special, either. It's pleasant alternative background
music.
We're clearly not in the demographic. Hope you are. Play it loudly.
Time for another reinvention, Liz!
