Penultimate Mix 1.0
February 23, 2007
I do have a day job, and it's
about an hour each way to get there. The 'pod helps kill time.
Here are the 12 songs that
were on the heavy rotation mix
this week, and maybe next week, too. It's not perfect, but it's
close. If you're so inclined,
download the whole thing from iTunes
here. Got a suggestion for the ultimate mix? Drop me a
line
here.

Midnight At The Oasis -
3:21 - Renee Olstead - Renee Olstead
It's hard not to be taken in by this young woman - a soap opera star in
the US, she was just 14 when she cut this one in 2004. Notice how the
lyrics have changed to fit 14-year-old sensibilities. Otherwise, we'd all be locked up. |
Taking A Chance On Love
3:17 - Taking A Chance On Love -
Jane Monheit
Among the new crop of standards singers, it doesn't get much better
than this. Overexposed, maybe. But this is as solid a performance as
you'll find these days. She hits the notes, and they stick! |
 |
 |
Nature Boy - 4:44 - Gypsy
In My Soul - Connie Evingson
This was one of those senerendipitious Friday night beer-in-hand finds
at iTunes. Stellar album. |
Back Home To Me - 3:35 -
Sophie Milman - Sophie Milman
Found this one on MusicMatch before they were gobbled up by Yahoo!
Canadian. Rested at number one on the 'pod for much of the Summer of 2006 |
 |
 |
On The Sunny Side Of The
Street - 3:12 - Introducing Robin McKelle -
Robin McKelle
Replaced Ms. Milman as top of the 'pod in the Fall of 2006. Parky
likes her on BBC Radio 2, as well. From Boston. Largely uses the Riddle
arrangements for Sinatra. Kicks ass. I love this disc. |
All That Jazz - 4:21 - Make
Believe - Jessica Molaskey
One-half of "Radio
Deluxe," the radio program/podcast that I've been spending quality subway
time with lately. Ms. Molaskey has that Broadway presence, without
overpowering - as so many do. |
 |
 |
'Tain't What You Do - 2:46
- Skylark - Annie Ross
Found this while researching the more recent release ("Let
Me Sing") from this
legendary singer. This track (from the 50s) leaves one slack-jawed.
Okay, it left me slack-jawed. |
Big Spender
2:17 - Bette
Midler Sings the Peggy Lee Songbook -
Bette Midler
Yes, I know. You think the Peggy Lee version was better. Your opinion.
Everyone has one. Ms. Midler deserves points for simply keeping this
stuff fresh, and this track beats the original, in my opinion. |
 |
 |
Blue Moon - 5:40 - Blues In
the Night - Ann Hampton Callaway
One of the best running around the NYC nightspots. Writes good stuff,
too. Breathtaking voice. |
They All Laughed - 4:03 -
The Tender Trap - Stacey Kent
I didn't really think women were doing this stuff in the modern era
until I heard this on NPR while out for the morning walk back in 2000.
It's the single song that made me go looking for more. |

 |
Chanson D'Amour - 2:57 -
Coming Out - Manhattan Transfer
Oh, my. Just listen to a young Laurel Massé. Recorded in 1975, this is
The
Manhattan Transfer (and Ms. Massé) in their prime. AllMusic calls this
album one of their "weakest." Even the group didn't much
care for it. Poppycock. This was the hit - number one across
much of Europe in '76. |
Midnight At The Oasis -
3:34 - Maria Muldaur - Maria Muldaur
You heard the girl - now hear the woman. From 1973, if it doesn't
sharpen your pencil, perhaps you should answer one of those "blue pill"
e-mails. |
