Alison Moyet - The
Turn (W14)
Released: October 15, 2007 (UK)
Here's my problem. The first time I heard Alison Moyet, it was seven or
eight years ago, on "Heart FM" in London - on their Saturday night
"Dancing in the City" program.
The Song was "That Ole Devil Called Love," and I ran out and bought all
the discs by Ms. Moyet (and by Yazoo) that I could find.
Uneven, I thought. When she's good, she's very, very good.
But it didn't stop me from buying discs. "Voice" was a favorite; and
yes, I know it was filled with old standards, but "Hometime" wasn't, and
I still play both of them a lot.
So. I worry that this disc is an effort by Ms. Moyet to practice her
art at the expense of commercial success. There's one track that clearly
has commercial radio stamped on it - not coincidentally, it's the track
I like the most.
"The Man In The Wings" is my favorite, and it will make the 'pod
rotation.
The others - well, they're all a bit gloomy, and Ms. Moyet's bluesy
interpretations are a little theatrical, and over the top. Several of
the tracks were written for the stage - a play titled, "Smaller," which
had a run in London.
Since I paid high import prices, I was disappointed.
As I write this (11/07/07), I'm getting mixed messages on whether or
when this disc will be available in the colonies.
Either way, listen before you buy, and you might consider an a-la-carte
purchase of tracks.
