Martina McBride -
Waking Up Laughing (RCA)
Released - April 3, 2007
The rule of marketing is that you define your market, your audience -
and then you super-serve them.
Martina McBride is a study in superior marketing. But unless you're into
stories about mistreated, spunky, and ultimately victorious women -
well, I don't know. I'm clearly not part of the target market. I simply
get the impression that Ms. McBride doesn't like men much. My son, who
likes country music a lot, had his "off" switch flipped after "This
One's For The Girls."
Then again, I've taught him to point at the posters at the library
urging girls to read - and ask, "...where are the posters urging boys to
read?"
Ms. McBride's superior voice is wasted time after time after time on
this dreck, and that's too bad - because more than many artists out
there today, she has remained true to Nashville's roots, and the
singer-songwriter tradition.
But there's only so much, "He Broke Your Heart | You Can't Cry Enough |
But You're Not The Only One" I can take.
Please don't get me wrong. I'm sure there's a market for this stuff, or
else Ms. McBride wouldn't keep doing it.
About every fourth album, I buy one - hoping I'll like it, because of
all the talent she and her band clearly have.
It just isn't my cup of tea.
Another ten bucks down the drain. I've got to stop this.
