Luba Mason - Collage (PS
Classics)
Released: October, 2004
From Broadway ("How To Succeed In Business") to this collection of
mostly newer covers of songs you've heard before.
I'll digress here for a moment. One acts on a stage, and must project for
the audience, or
everything is lost. It seems to me that it's a different animal than
working a microphone up close. For that reason, I think that stage
actors singing in a studio lose a lot of subtlety.
That's certainly the case here. "Overacting" is the word that comes to
mind.
Ms. Mason's voice is strong, and she displays great range. But everything
seems a little too over the top. Every emotion is in your face, every
range exagerrated. Subtle it's not.
All that said, there are some worthwhile tracks on this collection. "Moondance,"
the Van Morrison classic, is well done. I was surprised at how well Neil
Diamond's "Cherry, Cherry" translated to a softer, latin treatment. And
"Don't Shoot The Hooey To Me, Louie" is great fun. "Shamed Into Love"
comes close to being a gentle treatment.
All the best are available by the track at iTunes. Take what you need, and
leave the rest. Say - those would make great lyrics!
