Lyambiko - Inner Sense (Sony/BMG)
Released: February 22, 2007

Sigh. You can break up, then get back together with your girlfriend, but it's never the same as it was the first time.

I'm not sure I'll be paying import prices for one of these discs again.

The voice I found so beguiling on a trip to Berlin two years ago - now simply sounds strident. The disc - mostly original stuff from Lyambiko's piano guy, Marque Lowenthal - was disappointing to me.

The lyrics didn't rhyme.

The lyrics didn't scan.

The music had no discernable pattern.

Sort of like that really bad cacophonous European stuff from the sixties.

I wanted to make sure I wasn't wrong about these guys from the beginning, so I went back and listened to a couple of their earlier albums - the simply titled, "Lyambiko" from 2005, and "Shades of Delight" from 2003.

I still liked them. So it wasn't me.

Saving graces on this disc - a pair of classics - "Stompin' At the Savoy," and "Little Girl Blue," both worth a buck if you can find them a la carte.

But as for the whole disc, I should have passed, and I'll be doing lots of research before I pick up a Lyambiko disc at import - or full price again.

You should, too.

One and one-half microphones (out of four)
