Carolyn Leonhart (Sunny Side)
Released: April, 2005

I can't remember how I found Carolyn Leonhart. But one recent Friday night I did - and I'm pleased.

And I'm doubly pleased that my itchy mouse finger was able to buy this disc at iTunes just a few clicks later. Carolyn Leonhart is a former backup singer for Steely Dan. This is her second solo disc; it's a mix between original tunes and standards. I prefer the standards, but the whole disc is great.

This is a young woman with a very versatile voice. From intense, as in the opening cut, "Noneday" - to those little doodly things with a bass ("Sometimes I Think") that I'm not crazy about.

My favorites on this disc were "I'm In The Mood For Love," and "Moon River." Watch for husband Wayne Escoffery on Tenor Sax on "Noneday." Outstanding.

I prefer the quieter second half of the disc. Ms. Leonhart sounds great when she's singing full out - but she's able to make the most of her fine voice where there's some room for nuance and emotion.

No need to keep singing backup - I'm looking forward to more solo outings.
