Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend
(Single/RCA) I was laughing my as...er, butt off. I don't know what's funnier - this pre-release single from the upcoming "The Best Damn Thing," or the comments from the kids at iTunes. So. First the music. It sounds like every other girl song these days, pounding beat, catchy lyrics like, "Hey! Hey! You! You! | I don't like your girlfriend!" or "I'm the mother....ing princess!" Well, yeah. There's that. I think it's part of the "brat" image that Ms. Lavigne and her handlers try to cultivate. Call me crazy, but I'm thinking it might be a parody of that same image. Whatever it is, it's a hoot - and you can't tell me you didn't know young women like this at your high school. Okay - the second reason I'm laughing. One of the comments at iTunes: "She has a lot of talent, but wow. She has really sold out. This song can be put in the same genre as Paris Hilton now." Okay - the third reason I'm laughing. I think people might actually aspire to that. It's either laugh...or cry.
