Ellen Honert - Breath Of The Soul (Mill
Station)
Released: July 10, 2007
Dutch singer/songwriter Ellen
Honert seems to be a protégé of husband-wife team Tuck and Patti. She
credits an almost chance meeting with them as the starting point for a
music career she had given up for dead.
Having friends like that is not a bad place to be. This collection of a
dozen songs - half covers, half original material - is a great place to
get a career started. Or re-started. Ms. Honert's strong Alto voice
powers through the material with confidence, and with the likes of Patti
Cathcart backing some of the tracks, and the Turtle Island String
Quartet on others...well, it's nice to have friends.
I think the originals suffer a little in translation. Some of the
structures seem a little convoluted, and the fits a little forced
together. But the tracks never suffer because of Ms. Honert's voice.
My favorites include (this one surprised me) a nicely-swinging version
of the Beatles' classic, "Got To Get You Into My Life," along with
Stevie Wonder's "If It's Magic." I don't speak Dutch. It seemed to me,
though, the the pieces fit better on "Inspiratie," which was performed in
Dutch.
Ms. Honert, I think, has quite a career ahead - whether in this country
or back home.
At CDBaby or iTunable - go listen there. I'd be interested in what you
think.
I like it...a more than worthy first effort. I want to hear what's next.
Highly recommended.
