Terri Hendrix - The
Spiritual Kind (Willory)
Released - August 28, 2007
Cross Joni Mitchell with Dolly Parton - and you might come close to what
Ms. Hendrix sounds like.
The opening lines of "Life's A Song," the first track on this disc -
sort of set the tone:
Lately, I've been counting up
All my days, good and bad
I found that joy is more than double
All the trouble I've had
I felt like I got a raised eyebrow (well, we were on the phone) a week
or two ago from an Austin
friend - when I said that all the female singers coming out of his city
sounded alike to me.
Although technically, Ms. Hendrix is from San Antonio, she has picked up
a slew of Austin awards, including "Best New Artist" from the local
newspaper. Ms. Hendrix has a Grammy hanging around for co-writing the
Dixie Chicks song, "Lil' Jack Slade."
Oh. And Natalie Maines' father, Lloyd, plays just about everything, and
produced the disc, too.
This isn't passive listening - you'll need the lyrics to get all of the
messages. "Jim Thorpe's Blues" takes a shot at how Native Americans are
treated. "What is the Color Of The Soul" speaks to the heart of anyone
who ever asked the question, "If the children's song says, 'red and
yellow, black and white - all are precious in His sight,' why do we act
the way we do?"
Country, bluegrass, folk - I don't know what to call it, but I can't
help but like it.
And it doesn't sound like everything else from Austin. I
kicked myself for letting this one sit around for so long, before I
listened.
Don't make the same mistake, my friend.
Very highly recommended.
