It grew on me, okay?
I was ready to pass on this one, but it kept coming up on the 'pod, and
I kept hearing the catchy "Let's Try This Again," written by Gazarek and
her pianist, Josh Nelson. That track leads to Seamus Blake's "Northern
Lights," and every time I hear it, I hear something different. It's
really a little masterpiece.
Ms. Gazarek channels Joni Mitchell - on Ms. Mitchell's "Carey," giving a
whole different sound, yet it's her voice that brings it all back.
Truth is, for all the talk I do about standards, the tracks I liked the
best were the ones written by the aforementioned Mr. Nelson.
"Makes Me Feel This Way" features Mr. Nelson not only on piano, but on
Hammond Organ - and "Without You" starts simply, and builds, layer by
layer, into a beautiful anthem.
Some wise reviewer said you'll want the early
discs once Ms. Gazarek breaks out
That may have happened here.
Highly recommended.
