Lisa Fuller - Teach Me
Tonight (Bizarre Planet)
Released - April, 2006
This one sat in the "vocal" section of iTunes for a good two months,
with no information. No ability to listen, no reviews. No idea of what was
on the album.
A little Googling turned up the fact that Ms. Fuller is a former soap
actress ("General Hospital") with a number of other TV credits ("Charles
In Charge," "Fresh Prince of Bel Air"), who is married to another
sometimes soap actor, Dan Gauthier. One report says they met during the
filming of 1989's "Teen Witch."
There was virtually nothing about this album - anywhere. But it was a
Friday night at iTunes, and I had a beer in my hand. The worst thing that
could happen is that I wasted ten bucks.
This is really a very good album. Reminds me of Julie London. The fact
that cut two is "Go Slow" probably had something to do with it. Ms.
Fuller, like Ms. London, doesn't have a lot of range, but there's a sort
of dreamy sensuality about her voice that makes this a very pleasant disc
to listen to.
The album is a nice mix of standards, and five written by Ms. Fuller,
including "Fade Away," which I liked a lot - along with "You Crossed My
Mind Today," written with pianist/arranger Bruce Gilbert and the album's
producer, Robert Duffey.
Jeff Parsons stands out on trumpet; particularly on Tom Waits' "Midnight
Lullaby." Others I liked a lot include "Straight To You," a tune that
sounds so familiar - and yet I can't find it anywhere else.
Textbook serendipity on a Friday night. Ten bucks well spent. Very highly
recommended.
Good luck finding it at a
brick-and-mortar place - iTunes has it, but there is no website for either
the artist or the record company. A Google search says you'll find
it at the usual online places.
And a note to Ms. Fuller - the credits don't include a publicist. You
either need one, or a new one.
