Bob Florence & Annette
Sanders - You Will Be My Music (MAMA)
Released: June 13, 2007
Discovering this disc started as one of those one-thing-leads-to-another
adventures. Listening to Vikki Carr's "Live at the Greek Theatre," I
wondered what ever happened to the conductor/arranger on that disc, Bob
Florence.
He's alive and well - and as the story goes - was driving in his car in
California, turned on the radio, and heard Annette Sanders. Tracked her
down - on the East Coast, and said, "...we must make an album."
This disc was the result.
Nothing flashy here - it's him on the piano, providing a showcase for
her very, very expressive voice.
If you think you've heard her before, you probably have - she's been a
workaday studio singer for many years, backing the likes of Barbra
Streisand, Gloria Estefan and Dionne Warwick - and on many, many radio
and television commercials.
I wish they'd pick up the pace a little - most of the tracks are
melancholy ballads, and they tend to run together after a while; but any
of these tracks is a gem in itself.
Less is more, and something this simple couldn't be pulled off
by just anyone.
Recommended.
