Elin - Lazy Afternoon
(Blue Toucan)
Released: September, 2006
A consistent performer, composer and bandleader in the New York City
area - and as the publicity says, "..born and raised in Sweden by an
Irish mother and a Peruvian father. Grew up in three distinct cultures
and continents - Europe, North and South America. Oldest of six
children, fluent in five languages..."
Yikes!
I'm a sucker for Brazilian beats, and there's plenty to spare on this
offering from last fall, sent to me on the occasion of Elin's set of
appearances coming up in Brooklyn and Greenwich Village.
This one rocks out of the box, with the Gershwins' "Fascinating
Rhythm,"
featuring a mesmerizing clarinet solo by Anat Cohen; and the disc never
stops being fascinating. Elin's original compositions, like "La Luna,"
stand up to any classic Brazilian recording I've ever heard. "Doralice"
is about as catchy a tune as I've heard, and I don't even speak
Portuguese.
Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life" is hauntingly phrased - accompanied only
by Luiz Simas on piano, who also arranged the album.
Watch for Elin at "Night and Day" in Brooklyn in May, and "Sweet
Rhythm
NYC" in June.
And most anywhere else. Go iTune this one, and you may well decide to
book a flight to the Big Apple.
Highly recommended.
