Minnie
Driver - Everything I've Got In My Pocket (Zoë Records)
Released: October 2004
Okay. I bought this one
because I happen to think that Minnie Driver is a pretty fair actress, and
yeah - I've been buying albums because of their cover ever since Nancy
Sinatra's "Sugar."
And I didn't know (until I started doing research for this review) that
Driver was headed for a career in music (with groups like the "Drunk
Sluts") before she was sidetracked for the 1995 movie, "Circle of
Friends."
When I bought the disc, I half-expected awful. I figured that I'd have a
collector's item 20 years from now. Think William Shatner. Think Leonard
Nimoy. Think William Holden doing calypso. Yikes.
Truth is, it's a pretty fair outing. With the exception of a cover of
Springsteen's "Hungry Heart," it's all written - words and music - by Ms.
Driver.
But it's really nothing special.
Typically, when I listen to a disc, there are one or two tunes that make
me say - "That one. That's the hit." For one reason or another, one or two
will stand out. Not so here.
Each one is pleasant - the title track, "Everything I've Got In My
Pocket," is almost catchy, with clever lyrics like, "I want to lay down
beside you forever | Or just this afternoon." But although I remembered
that it was clever, I couldn't remember the line. That's what I mean by
"almost catchy."
And yeah, it all sounds like homemade poetry - and you have to wonder
which of Ms. Driver's past loves - from Harrison Ford to Matt Damon -
inspired them, but not for very long. Because there's really nothing
memorable about this disc.
Everyone's competent. Except the producer. It'll go into the CD
rack, and stay there for a good long while.
I simply won't think it's
awful. I might buy a second disc, but I'll listen to it before I buy
it.
