Deborah Cox - Destination Moon (Decca)
Released: June 19, 2007
Reason number one to hire the biggest band you can afford: it
sounds so damn good.
This one is billed as a tribute to Dinah Washington. Those are big shoes
to fill. Ms. Cox has nothing to prove to the popular music set. She's
been making 'em jiggle on the dance floor for more than ten years.
But Dinah Washington?
Well, as my son says - It's not talkin' trash if you can really do it.
And she can do it. Oh my, yes.
The big band only makes it so much better. Ms. Cox has a powerful voice
that's very well suited to this material. There's
talk of a
motion picture about Ms. Washington's life - with Ms. Cox in the
role.
That could work.
Credits for the band just go on and on - and nothing sounds better with
Ms. Cox's voice than a half-dozen saxophones.
Where to start - the title song flat out kicks. I like, "Baby, You Got
What It Takes," along with "Squeeze Me." The ballad, "Smoke Gets In Your
Eyes" is a nice change of pace.
But it really takes a lot of power to keep up with a voice like this.
And that's the second reason you need the biggest band you can afford -
because it lets you really open things up.
This disc must be in your collection. Ms. Cox calls it, "...an
introduction to all of the styles that I grew up with."
My son will be playing this one years from now.
Highest Recommendation.
