Colbie Caillat - Coco (Universal Republic)
Released: July 17, 2007
Oh, we're so serious here. We're so arty. How about something
sugary and sweet? How about something, Dick, that has a good beat and is
easy to dance to? Found it, for eight bucks on an end cap at Target.
Picked up the disc, said, "Who is this?" Ended up seeing Ms. Caillat's
name and photo twice more within three hours - in odd places - even
before I got the disc unwrapped.
Wondered why I hadn't noticed her before.
Short story - daughter of a recording engineer, begins showing her stuff
off on My Space, gets a large following, is signed by a record company.
Somewhere along the line, the single "Bubbly" gets word of mouth going,
and the next thing you know, the discs are jumping off the end cap at
Target for eight bucks.
Whew. And she's good, too! Good - if what you expect is nothing more
than sweet, feel-good, run the convertible with the top down on a summer
afternoon on the way to the beach music. And if it's that you're looking
for, it doesn't come much better than this.
"Bubbly" is the infectious single that got the My Space site cooking,
and it's got a killer hook. I also liked "Oxygen," and "Magic."
Heck, the whole disc is good, using my scientific rating system of,
"...did it make me want to jump to the next track?"
Can she keep it up? Who knows? Who cares? This one will be in the
console of the Jeep until at least Labor Day. Hey. That's why they call
it "popular music." It's doesn't have to be built to last. Just remember
- last year's "catchy summer tunes" recommendations from me were Jessica
Simpson and Paris Hilton.
Ewww.
Highly recommended - at least until Labor Day.
