I hate traveling on business.
It's one of the big reasons I left my last job. Now I'm two years into a
new job, and I'm...
Traveling again. Only this time, it's not to Charlotte, Dayton, or Buffalo.
It's a Saturday night in Berlin. I'm looking for local jazz. What I find
is the Lisa Bassenge Trio. I discover that Ms. Bassenge, as a member of "Micatone,"
has been part of the city's electronica/lounge music scene for a while.
With the trio, she joins with fellow Micatone Paul Kleiber on Bass and
Andreas Schmidt on piano. The result is a winner. The disc I pick up is
the first of the three that they've produced. Titled "Going Home," the
opening track is Madonna's "Like A Virgin."
I know what you're thinking. I thought the same thing.
Well, they pull it off - very nicely.
They also cover "Besame Mucho" on this disc, and "50 Ways To Leave Your
Lover." There's just enough accompaniment to frame Ms. Bassenege's voice -
dreamy and pure. This is thoughtful music.
Is it jazz? I don't know about that. But it works for me. Before I left
Berlin, I picked up the other two discs they've recorded - "a sigh, a
song," and "Three," released last September.
Are you ready for a small-combo version of James Brown's "I Got You (I
Feel Good)?" It works, too. It's on "Three."
I still hate traveling on business. But I'm pleased to have discovered the
Lisa Bassenge Trio.

these - or to hear clips - go to Amazon's German website - at

presuming you can do a little translating.
