Emilie-Claire Barlow -
Like A Lover (Fusion)
Released - January, 2005
I keep running across singers that make me say, "...why haven't I heard
her before?"
Only goes to show that I need to spend more time doing this.
Damn day jobs.
The good news is that I found this album - released last year - just
ahead of the release of a new one, so I'll be piping Ms. Barlow into my
ears on the Metro for quite a few
months to come.
Toronto-based, Ms. Barlow's voice is familiar to Canadians as commercial
voice talent for jingles and the like.
I have two favorites on the disc - the Brazilian warhorses "So Danço
Samba" and "Like A Lover," both of which stack up very nicely against
Lani Hall and Sergio Mendes' "Brazil
'66," thank you very much.
The whole disc has a playful quality to it - "The Things We Did Last
Summer" is a vocalese delight.
Ms. Barlow's light, playful voice reminds me of a Astrud Gilberto who
can carry a tune very nicely. Drummer Mark Kelso, Mark Rogers on bass
and guitarist Rob Piltch assist in
the light swing through the entire outing.
So. Let's see...Ms. Barlow, Sophie Milman, Susie Arioli and Carol
Welsman. Next time I head back to Detroit, perhaps I should come home
through Windsor and Toronto.
I am so anticipating Ms. Barlow's next album...in Canada June 19th.
Very highly recommended.
