Irene Atman - Irene
Atman
Released: June 19, 2007 (Canada)
Actors do Shakespeare. Singers cover what we call the
"Great American Songbook."
Same idea. How do you stack up?
Irene Atman stacks up very nicely. Blew me away. Knocked my socks off.
Oh my, yes.
This is superbly-crafted stuff. Ms. Atman and Pianist Danny McErlain
have put together a dozen tracks that showcase her fine voice. Many of
the tracks are from the fifties and sixties - the Bergmans, Michel
Legrand, Johnny Mandel. The disc starts off with "Summer Me, Winter Me"
that is so perfect - it may well be the version of this song that knocks
Barbra Streisand out of my head, when I think of it.
Yeah - oh, my.
There's not a bad track on the disc. Highlights for me included the Bob
Haymes/Alan Brant track, "That's All" (which includes a fine solo from
Mr. McErlain), "If I Love Again," and Ray Noble's "The Very Thought Of
You."
Even "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg," sung in French, is an
attention-getter.
Duncan Hopkins and Gary Binstead on bass, Steve Heathcote on drums, Rob
Piltch plays guitar, Bob DeAngelis on sax and clarinet and John MacLeod
on Trumpet round out the musicians. Best thing about them all is that
they never get in the way, framing Ms. Atman's voice perfectly.
And what a voice it is.
You must own this disc.
Highest recommendation.
